Dawn starts, cliffs and colonies

Sixty species before breakfast. Somebody has to drive the boat.

Which Boulders penguin trip actually stops at the colony. When the puffins are still on the Icelandic cliffs. What a guided morning in the cloud forest costs. Reviews of the guided birding you can book, everywhere it runs.

What you came to see

Penguins, puffins and flamingos carry more of these trips than every raptor combined.

Three birds account for most of the guided days on this site, because three birds are reliable: they nest in one spot, they do it on a calendar, and somebody runs a boat or a boardwalk to them. Start with the sure thing, then go looking.

Every guided trip
Where the birds are

Six countries that will fill a notebook in a week.

A cold current off the Cape, a summer cliff in the North Atlantic, a cloud forest that holds three hundred species in one valley, and a Patagonian channel nobody birds by road. Six places, and the best guided day in each.

The Cape, decided

Boulders, Cape Point or a guide of your own: three ways to spend a Cape day.

More guided birding is sold around Cape Town than anywhere else on this site, and the three shapes it comes in cost wildly different money. Here is what each one is, and what it opens at.

Penguin Parade, & Wildlife Encounters Eco Tour from Melbourne

Spend about 12 hours with Go West Tours visiting Brighton’s bathing boxes, Moonlit Sanctuary, the Nobbies, and Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade. Guides such as Cloe, Jools, Aleks, and Graeme are praised for lively commentary. Expect a small-group minivan, late return, cold evening weather, and no photography at the penguin viewing area.

Before you book

Birds keep their own hours, and four things decide whether you see any.

The start time is not negotiable: songbirds feed hard in the first two hours of light and go quiet by mid-morning, so a nine o'clock departure is a walk, not a bird walk. The season is not negotiable either — a seabird cliff is empty outside the breeding months. Bring your own binoculars if you have them; a shared scope is standard, a shared pair is not. And read the walking distance, because a hide reached over four kilometres of mud is a different day from a boardwalk.

What it costs

A morning with a guide, priced honestly.

Every trip on the site, grouped by what it costs a head. Plenty of the best mornings come in under the price of the taxi to the trailhead.

Under $50

Gate tickets to aviaries and sanctuaries, short lagoon boats, evening colony viewings.

$50–150

The standard guided half-day: cliff boats, wetland cruises, the Cape Peninsula loop.

$150 and up

Private guides, remote colonies, multi-day trips into forest nobody reaches on a bus.

Worth the airfare

Three colonies you plan a trip around.

Most birds reward patience. These three reward a plane ticket: they gather in tens of thousands, they do it in the same place every year, and somebody will take you there.

Victoria, at dusk

The Phillip Island Parade

Little penguins — the smallest of the seventeen species, knee-high at most — spend the day fishing off Summerland Beach and come ashore in rafts once the light has gone. The wait is cold and completely silent, and then several hundred birds cross the sand at once. Flash photography is banned and the ban is enforced, so bring eyes rather than a lens.

North Atlantic summer

The Icelandic Puffin Cliffs

Around sixty per cent of the world's Atlantic puffins breed in Iceland, in burrows dug into turf on the tops of sea stacks. They are ashore from roughly May, and by the middle of August the young have gone to sea and the cliffs are empty. Boats out of Reykjavik and Husavik run inside that window and not one day outside it.

The end of the road

The Beagle Channel Colonies

Magellanic penguins breed on low islands in the channel below Ushuaia, sharing the ground with imperial cormorants and, on Isla Martillo, a small group of gentoos. Landings are capped and licensed; most boats circle instead. October to March is the whole season, and the wind decides the rest.

Book before you fly

Four birding bookings that run on a calendar, not on your plans.

Most of this can be arranged the night before over a beer. These four cannot: they sit behind capped evening tickets, a breeding season measured in weeks, or a landing permit that a handful of boats share between them.

  1. 01Penguin Parade, & Wildlife Encounters Eco Tour from MelbourneViewing is a timed evening ticket with a fixed number of seats on the boardwalk, and the busy weeks sell through before the bus does.
  2. 02Original Big Whale Safari & Puffins by SpeedboatPuffins are ashore from roughly May and gone to sea by late August. Outside that window the boats still sail and the burrows are empty.
  3. 03Penguin Watching Tour by CatamaranLandings on the channel islands run on a small permit quota inside a short southern summer. Boats that can only circle cost the same and show you less.
  4. 04Penguins Evening Viewing TicketThe birds come ashore at last light and not before, so the whole thing is one fixed slot a night with a hard seat count.
