Little penguins — the smallest of the seventeen species, knee-high at most — spend the day fishing off Summerland Beach and come ashore in rafts once the light has gone. The wait is cold and completely silent, and then several hundred birds cross the sand at once. Flash photography is banned and the ban is enforced, so bring eyes rather than a lens.

The Icelandic Puffin Cliffs
Around sixty per cent of the world's Atlantic puffins breed in Iceland, in burrows dug into turf on the tops of sea stacks. They are ashore from roughly May, and by the middle of August the young have gone to sea and the cliffs are empty. The Beagle Channel Colonies
